3G/4G Sunset FAQ

3G/4G Sunset FAQ2020-07-14T12:43:56+00:00
Why are AT&T and other carriers shutting down their 3G networks? Will I be impacted?2020-07-14T12:43:18+00:00

Your current wireless communicator communicates over the AT&T 3G network. AT&T is shutting down the older 3G network by February 2022 due to explosive growth on their wireless network. In order to support this growth, they are migrating all traffic to the more advanced LTE network. Your non-LTE wireless communicator will be affected by this migration.

What is Interface Security Systems doing to mitigate the risk to my home or business during this harvesting period?2020-07-14T12:43:18+00:00

Interface Security Systems has identified all current customers across our entire footprint who could be impacted by AT&T sunsetting this network. The decision, targeted geography, timing and pace at which the 3G networks are sunset and shutdown are at the sole discretion of AT&T. We continue to work with our manufacturing partners to minimize any impact to our customers. If there is a known communication failure with your current panel and radio once the sunsetting takes place, we will contact you to review options that are available to you.

How can I be assured my system is working properly during the sunsetting period?2020-07-14T12:43:18+00:00

Interface Security Systems will monitor security systems across affected areas for communication troubles. However, if your installed system is no longer able to communicate properly due to the 3G sunset, you must contact us to discuss available upgrade options to an LTE device to restore communication with the Central Station.

Is this harvesting trend going to continue past this initial phase of 3G sunset?2020-07-14T12:43:18+00:00

AT&T has announced that it will shut down all 3G networks by February, 2022. This current 3G harvesting is the first phase and other carriers will follow. Cellular carriers, like AT&T, will continue to manage their core asset which is cellular spectrum. Consumer demand is the core driver of technology advancements such as these, and cellular carriers will continue to launch new technologies and retire older technologies to better allocate their resources. The end result will be better service and improved communications.

Will I be required to upgrade to an LTE option once the 3G sunset is in place?2020-07-14T12:43:18+00:00

Yes. Once AT&T and other carriers shut down their 3G networks, all 3G devices, including your control panel radio, will no longer function. An upgrade to an LTE option will be required to continue to communicate to our Central Station. Please call our Customer Service Department at 1.866-593-3480 begin discussing options at any time.

You mention AT&T specifically, but are all carriers sunsetting 3G networks? Can’t I just change carriers?2020-07-14T12:43:18+00:00

Your current security panel is carrier-specific based on proprietary alarm messaging services in your area. It is not possible to switch carriers without an equipment change, and only then if the appropriate alarm messaging service is available in your area. Our new LTE units communicate on Verizon or AT&T.

I am a Verizon customer. Should I assume this change with AT&T will not impact me at all?2020-07-14T12:43:18+00:00

Verizon is also sunsetting their 3G network. They are keeping their 3G network active until 12/31/2022.
