Wandering Patient Security That’s Easy to Deploy and Monitor

Interface’s wandering patient security tags are robust, small in size and reliable with easy tag management capabilities and flexible options to create secure, geofenced areas in hospitals, assisted living centers, and rehab facilities.

How the Wandering Patient Security System Works

The wandering patient security system comprises three critical solution components – patient tags, exciters and readers for real-time tracking, and centralized application to create tag identity, view real-time location of tags, and manage alarms.

Patient Security Tags for Every Use Case

Interface offers three types of patient security tags manufactured by GuardrdRFID. The tags are designed to offer the highest waterproof rating (IP68).

                  Frequently Asked Questions

What is wandering, and what are the implications of wandering patients for patient security?

Wandering is a behavior exhibited by patients with cognitive disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s who may walk out of a facility putting their lives at risk. In addition, behavior health patients may wander out of secured areas in a healthcare facility creating risks for themselves and those around them.

What are the financial implications of patient elopement for the healthcare facility?

Wandering patient systems are used in cases where patients might visit areas where they could cause harm to themselves or others. Besides the direct financial implications of this, there is a risk of six figure insurance claims against the facility where the patient was staying when the incident occurred.

How does real-time patient location monitoring  work?

Two mechanisms are used for location calculation. The tag attached to the patient periodically sends a ‘beacon’ which is detected by readers and the location of the tag is determined by trilateration based on the relative signal strength received by the readers. In addition, tag exciters placed at exit points from each floor are used to determine floor positioning and instantly triggers alarms if the patient with the tag attempts to exit the secure area.

Will the system detect if the patient removes their tag?

The PPT-2 tag is designed with a tamper detection mechanism. If the tag band is cut or removed from the tag, an alarm will be generated at the workstation.

How does Interface monitor the health of the patient tags?

Interface’s wander management system monitors regular pings/signals from the tags (typically every 12 seconds). The system can be configured to to generate a ‘tag missing’ alarm in the event that the tag has not been heard from in a pre-determined time interval (e.g. 2 minutes). This feature can be enabled by Interface after determining the monitoring requirements of the customer.

How do staff know when tags need to be replaced?

The patient tags typically have a battery life of 1 year. They will report a low battery condition roughly one month before the battery goes flat. Tags in low battery state cannot be assigned to a new patient but will continue to work till the battery is completely discharged.

Are the tags removed when bathing or cleaning the patient?

Patient Tags are waterproof and can be safely worn whilst showering or bathing.

Are the signals emitted by the tags and exciters harmful to the health of the patients?

The patient tags emit short pulses of low power RF (radio frequency) every 12 seconds. The amount of radiation is kept below a safe level and is controlled by FCC and Industry Canada regulations. The energy transmitted is orders of magnitude lower than that emitted by cellular phones. Exciters operate in the 125kHz range which has no impact on human tissue. These levels are also controlled by FCC/Industry Canada regulations.

Does the solution allow for monitoring visiting family members?

Staff Tags can be issued to visiting family members for tracking.
